Best Candles for Fall Hosting

This is probably my strongest opinion in the entire article: I would not put a strongly scented candle on the dinner table. When you've taken the time to prepare food, the aroma of the meal should be part of the experience.

A strong fragrance sitting inches from someone's plate can overpower everything you've cooked, and that's the opposite of what I want when I'm hosting. The good news is that you absolutely do not have to give up candlelight; I choose unscented sculptural candles.

You still get the warmth of the flame, the beautiful shape, and the atmosphere without introducing another fragrance into the meal. I especially love mixing candle shapes instead of using a perfectly matched row.

Try one taller form with two lower sculptural pieces, or place several smaller candles down the center of a long table. Keep the arrangement low enough that your guests can comfortably see one another.

For fall, pair ivory or neutral candles with:

• Linen napkins.
• Natural wood.
• Warm glassware.
• Aged brass.
• Small branches or greenery.
• Stone or ceramic accents.

Current fall-table styling is leaning toward layered natural textures, warm color, candlelight, and arrangements that feel intentional without being overly formal, and please give every flame enough clear space.

Beautiful tablescaping should never come at the expense of safe candle placement.

If you're preparing for guests and don't want to overthink it, this is the combination I would use:

• Entryway: "Orange Passion or Sol Santal." Start with something inviting. Orange Passion feels brighter and more energetic, while Sol Santal creates a warmer first impression.
• Living Room: "Sud Patchouli or Sol Santal." Choose something deeper where people will sit and spend time. Woody and earthy notes feel especially natural in the fall.
• Dining Table: "Unscented." Let candlelight create the mood while your food provides the aroma.
• Guest Bathroom: "Sparkling Lavender." Keep this space fresh, soft, and calming.

And remember: you don't need four completely different candle designs unless you want them.
