Holiday Party Candle Favors: How to Choose Designs Your Guests Will Love

There is always a moment before a party begins when you finally get to look at everything together; the table is set, the glasses are out, and those little details you spent far too long thinking about suddenly make sense. For me, a candle favor belongs in that moment.

I love the idea of someone finding a small sculptural candle beside their place card and realizing it is theirs to take home. It becomes part of the celebration before it becomes part of their home.

But choosing holiday party candle favors takes a little more thought than picking a pretty shape. You want something that fits your table, feels right for your guests, and is easy to carry home at the end of the evening.

As the founder and candle maker behind Dahil Bar, I think about both sides: how a favor looks when everything is beautifully arranged, and what happens when someone puts it in their bag after dessert. Both matter.

Here is how I would choose candle favors for a holiday gathering, from the first design idea to the final little thank-you.

Start With the Feeling of Your Celebration

Before choosing a candle, I would think about the gathering itself.

  • Is it a relaxed Friendsgiving dinner?
  • A Christmas lunch with soft colors and flowers?
  • An evening celebration with a more dramatic table?

You do not need every detail to match exactly. A favor can repeat one color, echo a curved glass, or bring a softer shape to an otherwise simple setting.

For a modern table, I would consider The Perfect Mini Knot Candle or Mini Bubble; their shapes add interest without needing an elaborate display. For something softer and more romantic, Grace Swan would be a lovely direction.

And if you love a festive theme, a small Christmas tree candle is worth considering. Just ask about the design and quantity you have in mind before planning the entire table around it.

My advice is to choose one detail you love and build from there. A holiday favor does not have to be red, green, or covered in glitter to feel right for December.

Give the Favor a Place at the Table

One of my favorite ways to present candle favors is to include them in each place setting. Picture a small boxed candle beside a folded linen napkin, with a name card resting next to it. It helps the table feel finished, and guests immediately know that someone thought about their place there.

Keep the proportions practical; if the table already has several glasses, large plates, and shared dishes, a petite candle will be easier to arrange than a statement piece. Try one complete place setting before deciding on the final design.

I would keep these favors unlit so guests can take them home intact. Place bare wax on its own small tray or protective base, away from food, rather than directly on a napkin.

For a buffet or a party where everyone moves around, a separate favor table may work better; arrange the candles near the exit with a simple invitation to take one. Beautiful favors still need to be easy to notice.

Scented or Unscented? Think About Your Guests

I love fragrance, but I would never choose a favor scent without thinking about where the candle will sit and who will receive it.

For candles displayed around a dining table, an unscented option is a thoughtful choice; the shape can do all the work visually while the food remains the focus. It is also worth considering when you do not know your guests' fragrance preferences.

If the favors will be handed out as everyone leaves, a scented candle can feel like a little invitation to enjoy the celebration again at home. For Grace Swan, options include Christmas Fir, Cinnamon Mist, Vanilla In Love, and Unscented. There is no need to choose several fragrances to offer variety; one considered choice can keep the planning simple and the presentation consistent.

Choose Packaging That Helps the Candle Get Home Beautifully

Packaging is part of the gift, but it also has a very practical job.

Sculptural candles have details worth protecting; a delicate curve or a small raised feature needs more consideration than something guests can casually drop into a handbag.

When discussing packaging, I would start with how the favor will travel:

  • Will guests carry it straight to their cars?
  • Will some be flying home?
  • Does it need to fit inside a larger welcome bag?

For a recent quinceañera order, I made 200 soft fuchsia swan candles decorated with roses on top and packaged them in clear boxes without ribbon. The color, roses, and shape were already the focus so that the presentation could stay simple.

That is an approach I love for holiday favors, too. Ask about packaging that suits the selected candle, then decide whether a label or short thank-you message adds something meaningful. You do not need to add every finishing detail; sometimes letting the candle be seen is enough.

Plan the Quantity, Budget, and Timing Together

Before requesting a quote, decide whether you are giving one favor per guest, per couple, or per household; that small decision changes the quantity more than people sometimes expect.

If each place setting will have a candle, count the seats; if you are giving one per household, a favor table may make distribution clearer. A few extras can be useful for additional guests or a keepsake for yourself, but there is no need to order a large surplus without a reason.

You can think about the complete cost, too: the candle, personalization, packaging, and shipping or pickup arrangements; a smaller design with a thoughtful presentation can feel just as considered as a larger piece.

For timing, reach out as soon as you have an event date and an approximate quantity. Custom event orders need their own confirmed schedule; do not assume the production time shown for an individual candle applies to a full favor order.

When contacting me, include:

  • Your event type and date.
  • The date you need the favors in hand.
  • Your estimated quantity.
  • The candle shapes you like.
  • Your colors, theme, or a few reference images.
  • Your fragrance preference, including unscented.
  • Any packaging, label, or message ideas.
  • Your approximate budget and delivery location.

You do not need to have every answer ready. Even a clear starting point helps us work through the options together.

A Small Detail, Chosen With Care

The candle favor I would choose is the one that feels connected to the celebration and still makes sense in a home afterward.

It might be a swan, a knot, or a small festive shape. What makes it personal is the thought behind it: the color you chose, the way you presented it, and the little message that says you were happy to have that person there.

If you are planning a holiday gathering, explore our Wedding & Event Candle Favors and tell me what you have in mind. We can discuss the designs, fragrances, personalization options, and packaging for your event.

I would love to help you choose something your guests will be happy to take home.

"A favor should feel like a little thank-you your guests can take home."
