How Becoming a Mother Changed Me, My Life, and Dahil Bar

Becoming a mother changed my life in ways I don’t think I could have ever fully prepared for. For a long time, becoming a mom was something I prayed for deeply. It wasn’t simply something I imagined happening one day. It was something I wished for, hoped for, and carried very close to my heart.

My journey into motherhood also came with loss. Before Valentina, I experienced the loss of my first pregnancy. Although I never had the opportunity to meet my first baby, he was my little boy in my heart. That loss became part of my story and, eventually, part of Dahil Bar’s story too. I created Hugging Oliver in his honor. Creating that candle gave me a way to turn something incredibly painful into something made with love. Oliver will always have a place in my heart, and that candle will always carry a meaning that goes far beyond wax, fragrance, or design.

And then came Valentina, my rainbow baby, my little star, my answered prayer.

The Little Girl Who Changed Everything

Having Valentina felt like both a blessing and a wish coming true. There are moments when I look at her and still think about how much I prayed to be her mom. Her face can completely change my day. No matter how busy, tired, stressed, or overwhelmed I may feel, seeing her smile has a way of making everything else seem smaller. She brought a completely different kind of light into my life.

But becoming a mother also required me to learn something that has never come naturally to me:

How to slow down.

I have always been the person who is doing something. Running errands, working, creating, planning, multitasking, crossing things off a list, thinking about the next project before I’ve even finished the one in front of me. Sitting still for long periods of time has never really been my thing. Motherhood challenged that part of me almost immediately.

Motherhood Taught Me to Slow Down

Babies don’t care about your to-do list. They don’t care that you planned to finish five things before lunchtime or that you had an entire schedule mapped out in your head. Sometimes they simply need you. And for me, learning to be present in those moments was one of my biggest adjustments.

There were days when slowing down felt almost uncomfortable because my mind was telling me about everything else I could be doing. But eventually, I started seeing it differently. I realized that holding my daughter wasn’t keeping me from doing something important: That was the important thing.

Watching her grow has made me much more aware of how quickly these little stages pass. There will always be another email, another order, another load of laundry, another task, and another project. There won’t always be another afternoon with my baby at exactly this age. Motherhood has been teaching me to appreciate those moments instead of rushing through them. I’m still learning.

I don’t think the part of me that loves getting things done is ever going anywhere. But now I’m learning that productivity and presence don’t have to compete all the time. Sometimes the most productive thing I can do is simply be where I am.

Dahil Bar Had to Change With Me Too

Motherhood didn’t only change my personal life. It changed the way I run Dahil Bar. Before Valentina, I had much more flexibility to dedicate long stretches of time to candle making, events, markets, and everything that comes with growing a handmade business.

After becoming a mom, that wasn’t realistic anymore; I simply didn’t have the same amount of time. For a while, that adjustment was difficult because Dahil Bar is something I have poured so much of myself into. I love creating candles, experimenting with designs and fragrances, developing new ideas, and meeting the people who bring my candles into their homes.

But I had to accept that the way I built the business before motherhood wouldn’t necessarily be the way I built it afterward. One of the biggest changes was stepping away from markets. Markets required packing candles, transporting displays, setting everything up, spending hours at the event, breaking everything down, and coming home afterward. With a baby and everything else going on in my life, I couldn’t keep doing that consistently. So Dahil Bar had to evolve.

I began relying much more on our online store, social media, word of mouth, referrals, and the amazing people who share Dahil Bar with someone else. In some ways, motherhood forced me to rethink my business, and I think that has ultimately been a good thing.

Instead of trying to run Dahil Bar exactly the way I did before Valentina, I’m learning to build a version of the business that fits the life I have now.

Finding Time for Myself Again

In the beginning, finding time for myself was hard. Really hard. When you’re caring for a new baby, your own routines can disappear surprisingly quickly. There is always something that needs your attention, and taking care of yourself can easily move to the bottom of the list.

For a while, I struggled to create any kind of self-care routine. Over time, though, I started making small adjustments; nothing dramatic. Just finding little pockets of time that belonged to me again. I’ve learned that self-care doesn’t always have to look like an entire spa day or hours of uninterrupted quiet.

  • Sometimes it’s taking a shower without rushing.
  • Sometimes it’s sitting quietly for a few minutes.
  • Sometimes it’s putting the phone away.
  • Sometimes creating a calmer space really does come down to a few thoughtful details.
  • Sometimes it’s lighting one of my candles after a long day and allowing the fragrance and soft light to change the feeling of the room.

Those little rituals mean more to me now than they did before motherhood. Maybe that’s because my time is different now.
When you don’t have unlimited time for yourself, you start appreciating ten peaceful minutes in an entirely different way.

Two Candles, Two Pieces of My Motherhood Story

Some Dahil Bar candles begin with an idea about shape, fragrance, or décor. Others begin somewhere much more personal. Hugging Oliver will always represent the baby I carried in my heart before I had the opportunity to hold my daughter in my arms, and then there is Valentina’s Love: I created it for my little girl.

There is something incredibly special about knowing that two chapters of my journey into motherhood have found their way into something I created with my own hands. They remind me that Dahil Bar isn’t separate from my life; my life, the people I love, and my experiences influence what I create. Sometimes even the most difficult chapters eventually become part of something beautiful.

Motherhood Showed Me How Strong I Am

One of the biggest surprises about becoming a mother has been discovering my own strength; I don’t mean that every day feels easy; it definitely doesn’t.

There are days when I’m tired, days when the list feels endless, days when I’m trying to figure out how everything is possibly going to fit into 24 hours. But somehow, I’ve found a balance.

  • I am a mom to my sweet Valentina.
  • I have my full-time career in digital marketing.
  • I continue building Dahil Bar.
  • I’m creating candles, developing ideas, managing responsibilities, taking care of my family and, little by little, remembering to take care of myself too.

Before becoming a mother, I’m not sure I realized how much I was capable of carrying: Motherhood showed me.

It has helped me discover a stronger version of myself, not because I suddenly have everything figured out, but because I’ve learned how to adjust when life changes. I’ve learned that balance doesn’t mean giving everything the exact same amount of attention every day.

  • Some days Valentina needs more of me.
  • Some days work demands more.
  • Some days Dahil Bar gets my creative energy.
  • And some days I need to give a little of that energy back to myself.

I’m learning to be okay with that.

The Woman I’m Becoming

When I think about who I was before motherhood and who I am today, I still recognize the same ambitious woman who loves creating, working, planning, and making things happen.

  • She’s still here.
  • But she’s different.
  • She’s learning to slow down.
  • She’s learning to appreciate the moments that don’t appear on a to-do list.
  • She’s learning that taking care of herself isn’t selfish.
  • She’s learning to build a business around her life rather than trying to build her life around a business.
  • And she’s learning that she is much stronger than she realized.

Most importantly, I get to experience all of this while watching my little rainbow baby grow; Valentina changed my life for the better. She made me a mother, but in many ways, she also helped me discover a new version of myself: as a woman, a business owner, a professional, a creator, and a mom.

And when I see her face at the end of a long day, everything lights up again; she is my little star, and I will always be grateful to be her mom.

“I realized that holding my daughter wasn’t keeping me from doing something important. That was the important thing.”
